What do Cretaceous dinosaurs, 17th-century vineyards, and ancient desert lagoons have in common? They’re all within 5 hours of Monterrey — and you can visit all three in a single day.

The Wines & Dinos Road Trip is one of our most requested tours precisely for that reason: three completely different experiences strung together in an itinerary that flows naturally, without rushing and without wasting a single hour.

Stop 1: Saltillo — Desert Museum

Estimated time: 1.5 – 2 hours
Arrival: ~7:30am

The Desert Museum (Museo del Desierto) in Saltillo is one of the best natural history museums in Latin America. Three perfectly designed thematic areas:

  • Desert paleontology: Original skeletons and reconstructions of dinosaurs found in Coahuila — including a complete Spinophorosaurus at 17 meters long. Northern Mexico was home to some of the largest Cretaceous species
  • Evolution and geology: 4.6 billion years of Earth’s history told through interactive visual displays. The meteorite hall and mineral section are outstanding
  • Desert biodiversity: An exhibition on northern Mexico’s ecosystems including the Cuatro Ciénegas wetlands — a perfect preview of the day’s final stop

Suitable for all ages. Kids go straight to the dinosaurs; adults get hooked in the geology section. The museum’s architecture — with a desert botanical garden of Chihuahuan cacti — is itself worth seeing.

“I only came because my partner wanted to. I left convinced it was one of the best hours of the trip. The dinosaur skeletons make you feel small in the best possible way.”

Stop 2: Parras — Home of the First Wine in the Americas

Estimated time: 1.5 – 2 hours
Arrival: ~10:30am

Parras de la Fuente isn’t just a pretty town (though it is). It’s where in 1597, the first winery in North America was founded — Casa Madero — which still produces wine today on the same grounds.

The Wine Tasting

In Parras we visit local vineyards, which includes:

  • Vineyard walk: through the vine rows that turn spectacular colors in autumn, while the guide explains the region’s winemaking process
  • Guided tasting of 3–4 wines: from fresh whites and rosés to Cabernet and Merlot reds grown at elevation
  • Basic pairing: regional artisan cheeses and bread to accompany the tasting
  • Free time in Parras’ historic center for coffee, colonial architecture, and buying bottles to take home

The wines of Parras have a distinctive character: high-altitude, semi-arid conditions produce grapes with concentrated sugar and good tannins — resulting in wines different from Baja’s Valle de Guadalupe or Chile.

Note for non-drinkers: The vineyard is open to all. The tasting is adults-only, but non-drinkers simply skip the wine portion and enjoy the vineyard walk. Some wineries also offer natural grape juice. The rest of the day has nothing to do with alcohol.

Note for groups with kids: Children visit the vineyard normally. Ages 12+ tend to engage well with the full experience; younger children are better suited to the 1-day Cuatro Ciénegas tour instead.

Stop 3: Cuatro Ciénegas — The Magical Town

Estimated time: 3 – 4 hours
Arrival: ~1:30pm

After paleontology and wine, we arrive at the main destination: the Cuatro Ciénegas Valley. Depending on your package, the experience varies:

Standard Option (1-Day Wines & Dinos Tour)

  • Río Los Mezquites: Swimming in crystal-clear 26°C water with endemic soft-shell turtles and pupfish swimming around you
  • Poza Azul: The unmissable turquoise photo — and a chance to see 3.5-billion-year-old living stromatolites
  • Main Plaza: The colonial heart of the Pueblo Mágico — church, bandstand, and the best artisan ice cream in the state

Extended Option (2 Days)

If one day isn’t enough — and for many people it isn’t — the 2-day version adds:

  • Las Playitas with kayaking and stargazing dinner on night one
  • Gypsum Dunes and Marble Mines on day two
  • Accommodation at Hacienda 1800 or Hotel María Elena

The Return to Monterrey

We depart Cuatro Ciénegas between 5:30pm and 6pm to arrive back in Monterrey between 9:30pm and 10pm. Most people spend the return trip asleep in the Sprinter — which is the best indicator that the day was complete and worthwhile.

Who This Route Is For

The Wines & Dinos Road Trip is ideal for:

  • Friend groups who want maximum variety in minimum time
  • Couples looking for a diverse, memorable day
  • Adults without young children (the wine tasting and pace are better suited to 12+)
  • People who’ve already visited Cuatro Ciénegas and want to add the Saltillo and Parras stops
  • Business travelers in Monterrey who want to maximize a free day

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the wine tasting included? Yes, included in the tour price.

Can I buy wine to take home? Absolutely. The wineries have shops with good selections. The Sprinter has space for your purchases.

Is it available year-round? We offer this route primarily on Saturdays. For private groups it can be scheduled any day with advance booking.

Does it work in winter? Yes. Winter in Parras is particularly beautiful (bare vines have their own aesthetic). Cuatro Ciénegas in winter has fewer visitors and pleasant daytime temperatures of 18–25°C.

How does this compare to a straight Cuatro Ciénegas day trip? You spend less time in Cuatro Ciénegas (3–4 hours vs a full day), so you see Río Mezquites and Poza Azul but not the Dunes or Mines. If Cuatro Ciénegas is your priority, the dedicated day tour from Monterrey gives it more time. The Wines & Dinos route is for those who want the broader Coahuila experience.

★★★★★
"The Wines & Dinos route was the best travel decision of the year. In a single day we saw dinosaurs, tasted incredible wines, and finished swimming in Río Mezquites. Impossible to fit more into 14 hours."
