There are places where you simply enjoy yourself. And there are places where you enjoy yourself and feel that what you’re doing has a larger purpose. Las Playitas is in the second category.

This eco-tourism park 5 km from the center of Cuatro Ciénegas directs 100% of its profits to the Plan Cuatro Ciénegas 2040, a program aimed at transforming the quality of life for the local community, with special focus on the next generation. Every ticket you buy, every kayak you rent, every stargazing dinner you book goes directly to that fund.

But to get to the purpose, first comes the experience — and the experience is exceptional.

Kayak in the Turquoise Channels

Las Playitas has a system of crystal-clear channels and small lagoons with a white sand bottom. In a double or single kayak, you navigate these channels at your own pace, with the sierra in the background and the absolute silence of the Coahuila desert surrounding you.

Kayaking here requires no prior experience. Currents are minimal, the water in the main channels doesn’t exceed 80cm deep, and staff gives a 5-minute instruction before you head out.

What you’ll see while paddling:

  • White sand bottom with aquatic vegetation moving gently under the current
  • Endemic fish swimming alongside your kayak without retreating — they’re accustomed to human presence in this park
  • Turtles sunning on the banks or crossing slowly beneath your kayak
  • Waterbirds — herons, ducks, and during migration season, flamingos and other species that use this wetland as a stop

The Stargazing Dinner: A Night That Changes Perspective

This is the experience we most recommend for families and couples. When night falls and the Cuatro Ciénegas Valley goes dark — far from the light pollution of major cities — the sky transforms.

The stargazing dinner at Las Playitas includes:

  • Outdoor table set up with direct view of the open desert sky
  • Charcuterie board with regional artisan cheeses
  • Wines from Parras — Coahuila’s wine region, just 2 hours from here
  • Professional astronomy guide with telescope to show you planets, nebulae, and star clusters
  • Talk about constellations visible from the northern Coahuila desert

The sky over the Cuatro Ciénegas Valley has very low light pollution, allowing up to 3,000 stars visible to the naked eye on clear nights. The Milky Way is visible from May through September.

Is the Dinner Suitable for Kids?

Yes, especially for children 7 and older. Seeing the moon’s surface in detail through a telescope, or identifying Saturn with its rings, is an experience children don’t forget. More than half of our stargazing groups are families.

Other Activities at Las Playitas

Beyond kayaking and the stargazing dinner, the park offers:

  • Interpretive trails of 1–3 km along lagoon edges, with signage about endemic flora and fauna
  • Mountain biking on the trails around the perimeter
  • Flora and fauna observation — with a guide, you learn to identify Chihuahuan desert plants and migratory birds that use this oasis as a stopover

Plan Cuatro Ciénegas 2040: Why It Matters

The community of Cuatro Ciénegas has fewer than 13,000 residents. Educational infrastructure and economic opportunities for young people are limited. The Plan 2040 was created to change that.

When you visit Las Playitas, 100% of the profit generated — not 10%, not a symbolic percentage — funds this program. That includes educational scholarships, job training workshops, cultural programs, and community infrastructure development.

It’s real purpose-driven tourism. Not a marketing slogan.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the stargazing dinner available? Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Advance reservation required — spots sell out especially during high season.

What happens if it’s cloudy? If the sky is completely overcast, the astronomy guide does the talk with a planetary and constellation projection indoors. The dinner continues the same.

Does kayak include safety equipment? Yes, life vest and paddle included. You don’t need to bring anything.

Can I do just the kayak without the dinner? Yes, kayaking can be booked independently. The dinner can also be reserved separately.

Is it included in tours? Las Playitas with kayak and stargazing dinner is included in our Adventure Tour and the Complete 2-Day Package.

★★★★★
"The stargazing dinner at Las Playitas was the moment of the year for our family. The astronomer explained each constellation with a story. We drove back to Monterrey at 1am and nobody complained about being tired. Already booked the 2-day tour for October."
